6 Key Performance Messages

Key Performance Messages - High Performance

At The Athlete Tribe, we have some clear performance messages that we always communicate with our athletes, no matter what level of competition or sport.

KEY PERFORMANCE MESSAGES

1. Consistency beats intensity

2. Fit the athlete to the exercise

3. Strength is the foundation of performance

4. Sleep is the number one recovery tool

5. Food is fuel

6. Growth mindsets win

CONSISTENCY BEATS INTENSITY

We want to work with our athletes for a long time; this allows us to develop relationships that go beyond the sport. As strength and conditioning coaches, of course, we enjoy hearing that your strength numbers are increasing or that you are getting faster. But for us, our true passion is to hear that your performance is getting better. Therefore, we want our athletes to be consistent with their training over long periods. The best athletes do boring things exceptionally well.

FIT THE ATHLETE TO THE EXERCISE

We see so many people training in the gym doing exercises that are not the right fit for them. It’s going to lead to injury and then reduce performance. Leave your ego at the door, is a great saying. It doesn’t matter if you can’t full squat or full bench press. Find an exercise that suits your body and progressive load it with excellent technique.

SLEEP IS THE NUMBER ONE RECOVERY TOOL

It’s old news that sleep is essential for us, the research points to enhanced recovery and athletic performance when we get correct levels of quantity and quality of sleep. Everyone is interested in supplements and tools to help with recovery; these are all a waste of time and money without good sleep practices.

FOOD IS FUEL

Once you start to think about your food choices and their effect on your body, how you see food takes on a different viewpoint. Most people under/overeat – this means that we overeat the wrong types of food and consume too little of the food that we need. We want our athletes to be fueling for training and performance. The first step for recovery from training and competition is nutrition.

STRENGTH IS THE FOUNDATION OF PERFORMANCE

It always comes back to strength. Stronger athletes get injured less. Stronger athletes can create more power. Stronger athletes play more often. During the whole year, there is always a foundation of trying to improve strength.

GROWTH MINDSET WINS

Having worked with elite athletes for over 15 years, athletes with a growth mindset win. They embrace the challenge, continue to work, understand that effort is required, learn from criticism, and lastly understand that failure is feedback. Without this growth mindset reaching your full potential becomes impossible. Take a watch of Carol Dweck a lead author on a growth mindset.
